A letter to my students

By Vera Naputi
Madison East High School

As part of my practice, I wrote this letter to my students to reflect on the power of language and why it matters in our learning community.

Dear AVID Students and Families,

I want to share some thoughts about words and language and why I address it when students curse or use words toward each other in random and indiscriminate ways. Curse words — whether used alone or in a string of expletives — are common and heard every moment of the day.

But here’s the thing: words and language matter. They matter when they are used lovingly and supportively. And they matter when they are used to be hateful, harmful or without intention. Research even shows that curse words can give us emotional and physical power — and I believe that.

In our AVID class, students get to choose their words and language. Maybe they’ll decide to use a curse word, and maybe they won’t. Maybe they’ll choose words that heal or ones that hurt. The power of that choice belongs to them.

That said, I want to be clear: what’s acceptable in various contexts is entirely up to each student. I deeply respect that. But part of growing and learning is understanding when, where and with whom certain language is okay to use. Knowing the difference and practicing that awareness is essential.

My role is to guide students in learning ways of being that create a safe space and, ultimately, a safer world — because our shared humanity depends on it. Whether in class, the hallways or my office, my purpose is to foster brilliance, cultivate genius, and bring about joy. That’s my commitment every day.

I’ve also learned that I am responsible for everything I do, and everything I don’t do. My faith and culture taught me that. So, it would be reckless for me to let words and language go unchecked in our sacred spaces of learning. I hold too much respect for each student’s background, culture and modes of learning to let curse words fly unfiltered. That’s why students have heard me redirect and remind students to use their words with intention. Because context always matters. And we will keep learning that together.

I want us to practice new ways of being in community. I want every student and family to know that I am committed to nurturing each learner and making space for imagination, individuality, life experiences and future dreams.

If you have any questions, thoughts or concerns, please feel free to reach out. I value open dialogue and welcome the opportunity to continue this conversation with you.

Much Love and Respect,

Ms. Naputi
