East High alumni find community at Boulders Climbing Gym

In the vibrant heart of Madison’s east side, Boulders Climbing Gym serves as a vibrant hub for recreation, competitive climbing — both individually and in teams — and a wide range of engaging programs that foster community and connections. Three passionate climbers who grew up in the neighborhood and are East High School alums, Izzy Kearney, Aileen Kearney and Bryan Guevara-Vega, share how their roots have shaped their experiences in the gym and their commitment to building a welcoming environment for all.

Izzy emphasizes the impact of the strong network of family, friends and community members she grew up with, noting that these relationships have instilled in her a special sense of belonging. She believes it’s essential for everyone who steps through the door of the gym to feel valued, regardless of their climbing experience. In her view, climbing can often be intimidating, so she is determined to help foster a community spirit where every individual feels that they matter.

Aileen builds on this idea, sharing that her time at East High surrounded by diverse voices taught her to challenge the status quo and aspire for inclusivity at Boulders. Her experiences at East High transferred to her belief that justice-oriented spaces must be intentionally created by and for community members. Climbing has transformed into a platform for connection and community-building, becoming just as important as developing climbing skills. Aileen’s efforts to lead the youth equity team reflect a commitment to ensuring that the gym continues to work towards being welcoming and inclusive.

Bryan echoes this dedication by highlighting the gym’s focus on accessibility. He notes that the Eastside community is diverse, and Boulders works intentionally to be accessible through inclusive programs. While these efforts may go unnoticed by some, they are crucial in fostering a sense of belonging for every climber. A memorable event called “Dynos ‘n’ Dogs” exemplifies the camaraderie that permeates Boulders. At this gathering, climbers came together to compete and share meals, reinforcing that the gym is not just about climbing but also about building community experiences and supporting each other’s physical and mental journey.

As these young adults navigate their college years, they embody the perseverance and strength that have defined their upbringing in their eastside neighborhoods and as East High School graduates. For them, rock climbing serves as a conduit for personal growth, support and friendship, ensuring that as they ascend the walls, they also elevate those around them. Through their shared love of climbing, they contribute to shaping a space that believes in community as necessary and important to thrive and grow.
