In the past, EMLL had a strong softball program, but numbers have dwindled since the pandemic. We are looking to grow the program back and get new kids involved. The summer softball season, which is open to kids of all abilities, runs from mid-April through July. Previous experience is not necessary for any age level. For youth younger than 7, EMLL offers co-ed tee ball.

Softball through EMLL provides many benefits to players ranging from physical health to personal development. Throughout the season, the kids will get outside to learn and practice running, throwing, catching and batting. Players will participate in co-op practices in combined age groups, which gives them an opportunity to learn from multiple coaches and from each other. Coaches, on the other hand, can learn from each other and share their passion with a large number of youth.

The kids learn to work as a team and to communicate with one another on and off the field. This is a wonderful chance for children to learn how to support one another. Learning new skills, overcoming challenges and contributing to the team’s success boosts their confidence and self-esteem.

Most importantly, this is an opportunity to have fun and make new friends. The kids will connect with kids from other schools, expanding their social networks and benefiting them as they move into middle and high school.

Remembering last season, Silvia said, “Softball was fun! My teammates were supportive. I liked learning a new skill.”

Parents and caregivers will also have fun and make new friends. Time and time again, EMLL participants talk about the sense of connection and belonging they have when coming to the ballpark.

Coach Eric, reflecting on last summer’s season, said, “It was really inspiring to see players who had not picked up a softball before learn the fundamentals of the game and have fun.” He will return this summer and “looks forward to watching the players continue to grow and gain confidence in the game. There are an incredible number of great athletes on the north and east sides of town who are great softball players, but just haven’t found out yet.”

Registration for softball is currently open for all age levels. All youth are encouraged to play, including those new to softball. Co-op style practices will begin in mid-April with opening day on May 10. After that, most games will be on weekdays. We are also seeking volunteer coaches for all age levels.
