Northside News

Far Breton Bakery has established itself as the Northside bakery. You may not know that owner Marie Arzel Young’s maternal heritage is from Brittany, France. The bakery’s products are strongly influenced by the summers Marie spent in Noirmoutier and Aix-en-Provence regions of France, as well as her past employment at Ovens of Brittany and L’Etoile with Odessa Piper.

The bakery moved to its brick-and-mortar location, 1924 Fordem Ave., and opened in November 2022. On Oct. 18, 2024, the bakery officially expanded to include seating and a made-to-order crepe menu. The new seating area is located on the front left side of the building. This will allow patrons to eat bakery and/or crepes with coffee or other drinks in the quaint café area opposite the retail bakery. The café has seating for up to 25.

In addition to sweet and savory bakery products, Far Breton Bakery is offering sweet and savory crepes. The savory option is made with a buckwheat crepe filled with mushrooms, brie and a fried egg, and balsamic shallot dressed microgreens. Sweet crepes choices include sweet lemon and chocolate hazelnut. Additional menu items will become available as the cafe grows, including options such as soups, sandwiches and French specialties.

Young founded Far Breton Bakery in 2019 after a career as a professional pastry chef that began in 2000. Utilizing FEED Kitchens and selling at pop-up locations, including the Northside Farmers Market, Young continued to build her bakery business while supporting the Northside. This December, Young hopes to feature baguettes and kouign amann for sale at Willy Street Co-op East and North.

Far Breton Bakery also joined the Dane County Farmers Market this summer. As an extension of this market, the bakery’s products will be available at the Winter Market at Garver Feed Mill on Saturdays. The bakery is also planning a Westside pop-up at Homestead Shoppes mall on Mineral Point Road (across from Oakwood Village-West and near the CUNA complex). The bakery trailer hours at Homestead Shoppes are Wednesdays, 7 am–12 pm, and Sundays, 8 am–12 pm.

Hours of operation for the bakery and café are Wednesday–Sunday, 8 am–1 pm. As the holiday season approaches, you may consider placing special orders for your festivities. You can shop at farbret
