On June 23, the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) launched its 2025 Freedom Schools summer program, bringing a dynamic and culturally enriching experience to first-, second- and third-grade students from Mendota and Lake View elementary schools.
Held at Mendota Elementary, the 6-week program is rooted in the legacy of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools, which began as part of the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer and continues today as a national model of summer learning, literacy development and youth empowerment.
The MMSD Freedom Schools program centers around five pillars:
▪ High-quality academics and character development
▪ Family and community engagement
▪ Civic engagement and social action
▪ Cultural awareness and celebration
▪ Health, nutrition and wellness
“Our focus is on literacy, but also on leadership, joy and community,” said Sarita Foster, MMSD Freedom Schools project manager. “This is more than a summer program. It’s a space where our students learn to dream big and believe in their ability to make a difference.”
The program, which required the submission of an application to attend, runs weekdays from 8 am–4 pm through July 31, and is provided at no cost to participating families. Daily breakfast, lunch and snacks are included, and regular attendance is a core expectation to ensure enrollees fully benefit from the experience.
Approximately 50 students are taking part in this year’s inaugural session. MMSD is piloting Freedom Schools as part of a broader commitment to equity, culturally responsive instruction and joyful learning environments.
