Literacy Network expands free adult education programs on the Northside

Northside residents can now participate in Literacy Network’s free adult education classes at more area locations. For 50 years, the Madison nonprofit has provided adult literacy and English language programs to Dane County residents. Its English as a Second Language, basic literacy, citizenship and high school completion programs help participants get jobs, earn high school diplomas, become U.S. citizens, improve communication with their children’s teachers and more. Annually, more than 1,400 adults from over 85 countries participate in its free literacy and English language programs.

In addition to ongoing classes at the Vera Court Neighborhood Center, the organization has added three Northside classes in response to growing demand for services from area residents. These are:

Essential Literacy Tutoring at Lakeview Library: Two weekly classes are offered for adults working to build essential skills in reading, writing, computers or math. Classes are open to native English speakers and advanced English Language Learners. Students work toward their individual goals one-on-one with a personal tutor.

Citizenship Classes at Northside Goodwill: For residents studying to become U.S. citizens, these classes cover the U.S. civics and language skills needed to pass the naturalization interview and test. Students work toward citizenship for many reasons, including to find better work opportunities, become more involved in civic life, and provide a more secure future for their family.

Basic English for Afghan Women at Northport Apartments: After barriers — including discomfort with mixed-gender classes, transportation and childcare issues, and having little or no formal schooling — prevented many Afghan women from attending Literacy Network’s existing English classes, the organization developed this special class that addresses these concerns. Now in its second semester, more than a dozen women attend this class twice a week.

“Our goal is to meet students where they are to make participation as accessible as possible,” said Literacy Network’s Executive Director Robin Ryan. “We strive to meet growing demand for our programs on the Northside and are grateful to the welcoming community members and partner organizations that have made this expansion on the Northside possible.”

Anyone interested in participating in Literacy Network’s classes/tutoring can contact Literacy Network at info@litnetwork.org or 608-244-3911. All students must register for class before attending. Classes are provided free of charge.

Support is also needed from volunteer tutors and donors. Learn more about how you can help adult students reach their goals at litnetwork.org or via the email or phone number provided above.
