The start of school doesn’t just mark the return of kids to indoor learning within their classrooms; it also marks the return of programming at the Troy Kids’ Garden. Neighborhood center groups and class field trips started back up in September after a few weeks hiatus at the end of August. There is once again joyful laughter and hours of exploration taking place at the Northside’s prize gardens.
This autumn we will be cooking new recipes with seasonal produce like okra, tomatoes, radishes and potatoes, and maybe even making our own pickles. The kids will also learn about collecting seeds for next season, saving herbs to dry for winter, and how to use cover crops to make sure our soil is nice and healthy come planting time in the spring. There will be an assortment of nature-related crafts, and plenty of bonding time with the chickens, as always.
We are looking forward to celebrating the bounty the garden offers and soaking up the nice weather together before winter rolls along again.
In addition to welcoming students back to the Kids’ Garden this fall, we’re inviting the whole community to come and enjoy autumn at Troy at our second annual Troy Farm Harvest Fest. Join us on Saturday, Oct. 4, 12-6 pm, for an afternoon of seasonal activities and fun on the farm.
We’ll be pressing fresh apple cider, building flower bouquets from our gardens, and offering cooking demonstrations and educational workshops as well as kids’ activities, music, food and more. We hope to see you for this fun, family-friendly, and FREE event celebrating the end of another amazing growing season at Troy.
