As summer emerges from the sometimes-chilly reluctance of springtime, a lot of people just want to be outside. They frolic, they shout, they sing, and they MAKE MUSIC.
In celebration of the longest day of the year, music comes outdoors all around the world. It started in 1982 when France declared a new holiday, Fête De La Musique. Many people took the day off work to celebrate the summer solstice with performances by musicians both professional and amateur.
The joy quickly spread, and by 2006 the city of New York held its first “festival of free concerts in public spaces.” Madison joined the fun in 2013 and now boasts “one of the largest events in the country. Parks, porches, restaurants, shops, worship spaces and more fill with music for all to enjoy,” according to their website.
While no one but Mark Twain (“You are certain there is going to be plenty of weather.”) can forecast rain or shine, you can plan to hear a lot of musical joy on the Northside this June 21.
Here is a list of performances in the area as of press time. For a complete list, visit makemusicmadison.org.
