A Northside-wide collaboration of organizations and community members is reaching out to residents with information about the 2020 Census. Read more about that work on page 18, and get to know the Northside Census Navigators who will be helping to make sure the Northside Counts this spring.

Hello, my name is Adrianna Miller. I go to East High School. I’m part of the Northside Community. I have been on the Northside for over a year now and have wanted to make a change in the community. I have always wanted to change how we have no women’s political party or government that has voiced its opinion without being shown in the media as a problem. I want to make young girls who want to speak their mind without getting criticized for it. I saw this job as an opportunity to make things for women in a world dominated by men. The reasons why I chose to do the census is because I wanted to be more involved in my community and give back to my community to make new things and opportunities for people.

My name is Donovan Spencer and I’ve been a part of this community all of my life. I was born on the Northside, attended grade school here, and worked my first job at the Mallards. I’ve always done things to benefit the Northside, my future and others well-being. This opportunity allows me to help out my community and make sure that I can fulfill everyone’s needs. I’m happy to be helping the Census 2020 become a more comfortable and easier task for the Northside community to participate in.

I moved to Madison back in 2018 from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and since then I’ve been getting to know the city’s countless community centers, foundations and neighborhoods. Almost 18 months later and here I am, still wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, learning everything I can about this awesome little city and the people who live and work here! Working at the Lakeview Library, I couldn’t be more excited to further the efforts of the NPC, reaching as many Northside residents as possible — it kind of makes me feel like a superhero! #TheNorthsideCounts!

Originally from The Gambia, west coast of Africa, I moved here when I was eight years old and have been living on the Northside for most of my life. I currently live in the Kennedy Heights neighborhood. I am the youngest of my two siblings and am a sophomore at East High School. Having lived on the Northside for some time, I wanted to help out and be involved in the community. I saw the census as an opportunity to do such a thing. Seeing how big an impact the census has, I want to help secure the future of the Northside and my own.

I’m Karuna, a senior at East High School, and I’ve lived on the Northside all 17 years of my life. You might see me working at Lakeview Library on Fridays, and while my work there certainly helps the community, I became a part of this Census Navigator Team so I could help the Northside in a much greater capacity. By getting more people to participate in the census, I can help secure more funding for our neighborhoods and make the Northside matter as much as it should.

My name is Dina and I am from Iraq. I am new to the Northside and am learning more about it all the time. I am also new to this country and excited to be a part of something so big that affects so many people.

I’m a student at East High School and a member of the Black Student Union. I lived on the Northside for much of my life. I even learned to read with my Grandma at the Lakeview library and had my picture printed in the Northside News as a young boy. I’m excited to give back to my community and be a part of something bigger than me.
