Mendota Community School kicks off

By Addie Lennon and Claire Fallon
Mendota Community School

Mendota Community School is thrilled to kick off the 2025-26 school year. School staff have been working hard to prepare for scholars. Not everyone may realize that staff come together for a week to learn together in preparation for the year.

This year Mendota has a school improvement plan that includes growing in the areas of social-emotional learning, attendance, math and literacy. Staff spent time digging into ways to teach each area of the school improvement plan. In addition to collaborating toward shared goals for the school, staff worked hard to create beautiful spaces throughout the building. From shiny waxed floors to bulletin boards to desks for every scholar, Mendota was ready.

Mendota welcomed over 450 scholars and families to the annual Welcome Back Bash on Aug. 27. We were excited to share our beautiful garden space with the Mendota community for this event. Students planted and cared for the garden throughout last school year, thanks to local partnerships with Americorps and Rooted. Attendees at the bash enjoyed eating barbecue, meeting teachers, and selecting free books. Many scholars received backpacks donated by generous community partners. There was a feeling of excitement and anticipation throughout the campus. It’s going to be a great year.
