What I’ve learned in my first year as Dane County Executive

Serving as Dane County Executive this past year has been the honor of my lifetime. Every day, I’m inspired by the incredible people who make this county such a special place: our public employees, innovative partners and engaged residents.

One of my greatest takeaways from this year is how deeply our community cares. Whether it’s the snowplow drivers out before dawn, our human services teams supporting families in need, or park staff restoring prairies and maintaining trails, Dane County’s workforce shows up day in and day out to make life better for others. Their professionalism and compassion are unmatched.

We are fortunate to live in a county that is both diverse and interconnected, where our thriving cities, towns and farms each contribute to the vitality of our shared home. Our local economy and culture reflect the best of Wisconsin.

That spirit of collaboration and creativity drives our work in county government. From clean energy investments and land conservation to innovative behavioral health and housing programs, we’re finding new ways to meet challenges head-on. Public safety remains a top priority, and we continue to invest in the people and tools that keep our communities strong.

As I look ahead, I know the next year and the next county budget will bring difficulties. Rising costs, flat revenues and federal uncertainty mean we must continue to make tough choices while maintaining the high-quality services our residents expect and deserve.

Fiscal responsibility is not just about balancing a budget; it’s about protecting our shared values and ensuring future generations inherit a county as strong and vibrant as the one we enjoy today. In Dane County, we plan for the worst, but we always dream for the best, and together, we make those dreams a reality.
