Project Process
The project launched in fall 2023 and through three phases:
Phase 1 — Project Development & Literature Review: Reading and assessing over 39 reports and data sources related to regional food systems. This process concluded in a comprehensive SWOT analysis that informed our contextual understanding of our food system.
Phase 2 — Community Engagement: An extensive engagement process included town hall sessions at venues across the county, small-group sessions for specialized community groups, outreach at community events through a team of Community Navigators, funded community-hosted engagement activities, and both a consumer and a food producer online survey. Dozens of in-person sessions generated high levels of participation and enthusiasm.
Phase 3 — Data Analysis & Report: The project team analyzed community engagement findings, developed draft goals and strategies with input from the Madison and Dane County food councils, and compiled the information into this Action Plan.
