Turning on the news is generally a depressing and scary thing to do in our current world. Bombs and shootings and concentration camps are the headlines. While I truly believe that love and peace will overcome the hatred, it’s a challenge some days to find the happy.

Just this morning, I was driving to an appointment and saw several red-winged blackbirds along Westport Road. It’s hard to describe how the sight of them shifted things in me. While I understand that I live in Wisconsin and that there will be more snow, the promise of spring was enough to give me hope.

I love birds and enjoy their presence every day, whether I am in the forest or my own backyard. Cherokee Marsh is among my most favorite places to hang out with them. It is the largest wetland in Dane County. And it’s right here in the beautiful Northside.

A short hike at the marsh will certainly yield many bird sightings. Sandhill cranes and American white pelicans are abundant. Pileated woodpeckers are a special treat for sure. It is a great place to see migrating species as well. The trees, the birds, and all the other flora and fauna make it such a special place.

As much as I love a sweet junco, I look forward to welcoming back the warblers.
