My focus as your state senator continues to be finding ways to make your lives better. For decades, Wisconsin Republicans have repeatedly written budgets and passed legislation to cut wages, forced schools to rely more on property taxes, and made healthcare less affordable. Every legislative session, I call on my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to chart a better path forward.
Our public schools have been underfunded for decades, leaving kids and teachers without the resources they need. When the state doesn’t fund schools, districts turn to referendums just to keep the lights on — which means your property taxes go up, even as we sit on a $2.5 billion surplus. My legislation addresses the gap between what our constitution guarantees — a quality public school for every child — and what the Republican-controlled legislature has delivered: rising property taxes, declining school funding, unaccountable voucher schemes, and disappointing test scores. Republicans have acknowledged that property taxes are too high, and I’m eager to work with them on a solution that upholds our responsibility to kids.
As the Trump administration takes another knife to the Affordable Care Act, I introduced a bill letting everyone buy into the same high-quality, competitively priced, nonprofit health insurance state employees receive. Whether you’re self-employed, a business owner, or simply paying too much, KeldaCare is for you.
Additionally, I authored legislation to raise Wisconsin’s minimum wage to $15 per hour, with a path to $20 by 2030. No one working full time should live in poverty — especially not the educators, CNAs and home healthcare workers most likely earning less than $20 today.
I always love hearing ideas and feedback, so please write, email (sen.roys@legis.wi.gov) or call (608-266-1627) my office.
