When I was in 5th grade, I set a goal to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer. When I graduated from college, that is exactly what I did.
I moved to South America for nearly three years. I immersed myself completely into Paraguayan life. I loved the people, the land and the food. I worked as a Special Education Volunteer. I developed a home visit program as well as began a program within my village’s primary school.
I have been back to visit several times and am in regular contact with my Paraguayan families. Thirty-five years later, I still make my favorite Paraguayan foods and celebrate Paraguayan holidays. Did you know that if you share a meal of beans and corn on October 1 that you will keep Kar’ai Octubre away and are ensured to have plenty throughout the upcoming year?
I knew I would love life as a Volunteer. My life is better because of this experience. What I did not expect was to become a huge fan of soccer (a/k/a football to much of the world.) Football games in my tiny village were the excitement of the week. Watching our national team on a little black and white television at my neighbor’s house was a highlight. And then came the World Cup. People went bananas.
In June, I had the privilege of attending the World Cup in Kansas City. So many people and so many lines. In a world ripped apart by fighting, I saw 70,000 people gathered to celebrate the world via sport. Differences fell away. People in a myriad of jerseys cheering their team, but also laughing and helping one another. So much love everywhere. I understand why it is the beautiful game.
