On three major issues facing Wisconsin — childcare, conservation, and college affordability — Legislative Democrats have put forward practical proposals, while Republican leaders have largely declined to engage. The consequences of that divide are becoming clearer.

In June, Wisconsin’s childcare stabilization payments expired. These funds had helped providers stay open and kept tuition increases in check for working families. Democrats anticipated the need for a transition and proposed multiple options, including targeted provider support, assistance for middle-income families, and workforce investments.

Republican legislators allowed the funding to lapse without adopting a comparable replacement. As a result, childcare providers are now warning of higher tuition, reduced capacity, and potential closures — costs that will fall directly on parents already struggling with affordability.

A similar situation is unfolding with the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, Wisconsin’s long-standing conservation initiative. The program supports parks, trails, habitat protection, and outdoor recreation projects statewide. Despite its popularity, it now faces uncertainty as another funding deadline passes without a long-term extension.

Democrats and conservation groups supported compromise approaches that would have continued the program while adding oversight and addressing concerns about land acquisition. Those efforts, however, did not advance in the Republican-controlled Legislature, leaving conservation projects and local investments in limbo.

At the same time, the UW system is preparing for a 2% tuition increase this fall. Democrats proposed a Tuition Promise program and broader affordability measures to reduce student debt and keep higher education within reach. Those proposals were not adopted, even as tuition pressures continue to grow.

Taken together, these outcomes reflect a consistent pattern: proposals aimed at stabilizing costs and improving long-term affordability have not been enacted. In their absence, families and students are absorbing the impact.

Wisconsinites are ultimately looking for stability — affordable childcare, strong public lands, and accessible higher education. We will continue to work to deliver results.
