The Madison Police Department (MPD) recently made changes to assist members of the community with identifying personnel as local law enforcement. Patrol officers will typically operate marked squads that are clearly marked as MPD police vehicles. Those patrol officers will be dressed in an MPD uniform. An MPD patch, nametag, and badge should be visible on the uniform.

Some MPD employees outside of patrol services have the option of not wearing a uniform. Those employees have been instructed to wear a jacket displaying the MPD patch or identifying clothing with the words Madison Police on them. In addition to identifying clothing, all unmarked MPD police vehicles have been equipped with a placard, signifying that the vehicle is assigned to MPD. If there are questions about the identity of potential law enforcement personnel in the Madison community, please reach out to MPD.
