I am a joyfully retired special education teacher. I spent 32 years in the classroom, but a lifetime devoted to making sure every person is valued and has the opportunity to experience and contribute to our community. In my service to Dane County as a Supervisor, I have worked especially hard to increase accessibility within our parks system. I am proud of the advances we have made to increase access for all.
Did you know there are Special Access Permits available, authorizing people with disabilities to drive vehicles on specific trails or overlooks? There are also accessible fishing piers and kayak launch stations. The Jenni & Kyle Preserve has wheelchair swings. There is an all-terrain wheelchair available to check out and use at the Capitol Springs Recreation Area. There is also a crushed limestone trail in the dog park at this location.
There are accessible campsites at the county campgrounds, including bathrooms/showers. Donald County Park has a horse rider mounting assistance platform. There are many trails that are paved, wooden or crushed limestone throughout the system.
You can get a reduced-fee permit for several activities based on disability or Veteran status. There is also an option for financial assistance for anyone who needs it. An ADA Coordinator welcomes requests regarding specific properties and requests.
This is not an exhaustive list, but a few highlights of options of inclusivity. More improvements are made each year. Please let me know if you have specific ideas for more. See you on the trails, beaches and playgrounds! For more details on accessibility options, please see danecountyparks.com/parks/accessibility
Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or issues. I am happy to help. I am also happy to visit your place of business. I can be reached at 608-335-6827 or ritt.michele@countyofdane.com.
