I’m sure you’ve heard collective nouns like a gaggle of geese or a pride of lions. But how about a prickle of porcupines, a flamboyance of flamingos or a streak of tigers? Okay, some are less well-known than others.
Did you know there is a collective noun for a group of volunteers? It’s called a constellation, which is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a group of stars.”
The word “stars” perfectly describes the many volunteers who help with the Northside News. We have volunteer writers from every corner of the Northside who send in stories about the people, businesses, schools, and events here. We have regular columnists who take time from their busy schedules to contribute to our newspaper. We have proofreaders who spend hours going over the paper before it is sent to the printer.
I, myself, am a volunteer. I do this because I have come to admire the many people who make the Northside a vibrant community, and I think the Northside News is an important part of it.
In this issue, we have news from bats to birdhouses, baseball to bikes, parks to pelicans, poems to politicians, scouts to schools.
The MPD has an impressive program on youth crime prevention. The Mallards have unveiled a unique art installation and a new hospitality space at their stadium. Madison College is offering some great summer camps for middle and high schoolers.
There are nature activities, special events, and new vendors at the Northside Farmers Market. There are updates on school construction, Occupy Madison’s tiny villages, The River Food Pantry’s grand opening, and the upcoming TPC Golf Tournament.
I’ve peaked your interest a little bit, haven’t I? Please look for these and other stories and then thank the many volunteers who made this issue possible.
Have a great summer!
