The positive impact of environmentalists, conservationists and nature groups is felt in communities around the world, including here in Madison. I’d like to give a shout out to the many people who contribute their time, their energy, their skills and their enthusiasm to caring for the beautiful nature areas on the Northside.

Environmentalists and nature groups often work behind the scenes, advocating for change, leading cleanups, and educating the public. Their efforts are crucial in combating climate change and restoring damaged ecosystems.

Members of the Friends of Cherokee Marsh, Wild Warner, Friends of Hartmeyer Natural Area, Friends of Starkweather Creek and Friends of Urban Nature dedicate themselves to preserving, protecting and caring for the natural world. Were it not for them, some of our best nature areas would be covered with roads and buildings.

This edition includes a story by Beth Sluys about a group of hard-working volunteers who are restoring land along the railroad tracks, now called Harmony Prairie. There is information about a Watershed Study to identify causes of flooding and projects to reduce flooding. You’ll find amazing photos of bees, and an article about ducks who winter in Wisconsin. The Calendar of Events lists numerous nature walks and outings offered by Northside volunteers.

I can’t begin to name all those involved, but you know who you are. To every environmentalist, conservationist, volunteer or supporter: thank you. Your unwavering commitment makes a difference every day. The beauty of our parks and lakes, and the health of our planet are all testaments to your hard work.
