“I have to announce that it’s my sister doing the cooking,” said Namgyal Ponsar.

The Northside’s spot for Tibetan cuisine, the Little Tibet Market And Cafe, located directly across from FEED Kitchens at 1113 N. Sherman Ave., has begun opening Saturday mornings at 9 am for breakfast specials.

We took the time to stop in and have a bite one Saturday morning, and co-owner Namgyal and her sister Sonam took the time to chat with us a bit before our breakfast.

Namgyal — or “Achi,” as her brothers call her — and her two brothers, Tharten and Thinley, also run the Little Tibet Restaurant on East Johnson Street, with a third location planned soon for the Northeast side.

After testing the waters with a food truck in 2016, the siblings opened their original location on the East side in 2019, and opened the Little Tibet Market And Cafe on the Northside earlier this year.

The market itself features Tibetan produce, dry goods, gifts and spices (as well as the occasional recipe on the community notice board near the entrance, so customers can use the ingredients on offer to create fantastic Tibetan dishes at home) alongside a lunch counter-style cafe serving homemade momos and other Tibetan dishes.
