Scouts BSA Troop 127
This winter, the scouts of Madison Troop 127 have advanced, sledded, volunteered, camped and ice fished, among many other activities. Notably, the scouts won an annual scouting sled race/advancement competition called the Klondike Derby. Our troop took home a trophy and brilliant memories.
One of our favorite activities this winter was a cabin camping trip at Hoard Curtis Scout Camp. Scouts woke up early to make pancakes before sitting down inside to learn lashings with spar poles and rope. Advancement went by quickly, as the scouts were eager to learn skills like building shelters and outdoor gadgets with the materials at hand.
After a classic grilled cheese and tomato soup lunch, the scouts trekked out on a geocaching expedition, learning valuable orienteering skills with their maps and compasses. After the hike, scouts ventured onto the ice to attempt ice fishing, which didn’t go so well as a food procuring endeavor, but still resulted in a lot of fun.
After supper, the scouts used their newfound lashing skills to build a Newton’s Cradle, which helped them learn about how outdoor education can lend a hand to understanding the world around us.
All in all, this winter was a success for Troop 127. We encourage kids on the Northside ages 11–18 to check us out, as we always welcome new faces in our scouting community.
