In late August, two beloved Northside leaders were recognized for their dedication to Madison youth at the Madison Youth Arts Center. Awards were presented by Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) Superintendent, Dr. Joe Gothard and Madison Mayor, Satya Rhodes-Conway as part of the Madison Out-of-School Time (MOST) initiative.

Arree Macon, Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) Afterschool Director at Lake View Community School, was named one of eight Outstanding Youth Workers of 2025.

Pat Wongkit, Director of the Northport and Packer Community Learning Centers, was honored as one of only two 2025 Legends of Out-of-School Time.

MOST, a collaboration of the City of Madison, Dane County, MMSD, and more than 45 youth-serving organizations, works to ensure all children have access to high-quality out-of-school programs. Last year alone, 14,371 Madison youth participated in 1.7 million hours of programming. These programs provide afterschool care, summer learning, and enrichment opportunities that support academic success and personal growth.

Despite their impact, out-of-school time staff often go unrecognized. The annual MOST Awards, now in their sixth year, celebrate their contributions with $500 awards. Winners are nominated by their peers and selected by past honorees.

Northside Honorees

Arree Macon began working for MSCR as a high school student and has worked his way up to site director. Known for his humor, warmth, and high expectations, he balances firm leadership with consistent love and care. Many of his current staff are former students evidence of his influence and investment in youth leadership.

Pat Wongkit grew up in an immigrant family who lived in the Northport Apartments and began helping with community center programming as a teen. For more than 30 years, she has been a cornerstone of the neighborhood, welcoming families, providing resources, and creating a safe, nurturing space for children. From furnishing apartments for families in need to cheering students on at school events, Ms. Pat has become a trusted supporter and lifelong friend to generations of Northside families.

Both honorees embody the spirit of MOST—building stronger communities by investing in children and families. Their recognition is a point of pride for the Northside and a reminder of the power of youth workers to change lives.

Let’s celebrate Arree and Pat by sharing our congratulations and gratitude for their service and lasting legacies on the Northside! Their hard work and love for our community make the Northside stronger, and we are fortunate to call them our own.
