Scouts BSA Troop 7127
On June 15, two crews of three Scouts BSA troops embarked on an unforgettable journey to Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimarron, New Mexico. The adventure began by first boarding a bus to Chicago, then a 24-hour train ride to Raton, NM, and ultimately a shuttle bus to Philmont.
The initial bus ride was uneventful, quiet chatter was shared as well as music to listen to on headphones. Upon arriving in Chicago, we had to move quickly — getting from the bus stop to our train, loading our luggage, and getting our tickets scanned — so we welcomed the comfort of our seats on the train. We were welcomed by a friendly assistant conductor who reminded us how important our “toesies” and “teethies” were during his safety speech.
After getting situated, many of us moved to the viewing car. We spent our time there cheerfully engaging in conversation with one another and with other passengers. Between observing the wildlife and changes in scenery, many card games were played and lots of snacks were eaten. Those not in the viewing car read books, listened to music or played card games.
The one glaring negative was that the train provided no comfortable way to sleep. This made for a very long night. On June 16, we arrived safely, but sleepily, at Philmont.
The travel home was the opposite. On the train you would find tired Scouts and advisors napping wherever they could find the space and conversing in short segments. The bus ride, though, was filled with laughter and giddiness about the arrival home.
With a total of about 50 travel hours, the trains and buses gave us memories that will be cemented in our minds for many years to come.
