Rooted
This spring Rooted has been growing with students across the Northside, not only at the Troy Kids’ Garden but also at several MMSD schools we partner with. Rooted provided programming at Lake View and Mendota elementary schools and at Shabazz High School through our Gardener-in-Residence program, and previously through the AmeriCorps Farm to School program.
Rooted’s farm to school educators offered classroom education about gardening, food and nutrition, and outdoor education where students got to plant and grow for themselves in their school gardens. In addition to gardening at school, students also visited Troy Farm and Troy Kids’ Garden for field trips, and Shabazz students volunteered at Troy Farm to learn about growing on a larger scale and to assist with the work of the farm. Outside of school, our farm to school team also led a popular after school cooking club at Lake View Elementary featuring cultural recipes from around the world.
As the school year comes to an end, we’re grateful for all the Northside schools and students we worked with this year. We believe in the value of offering farm to school programming as a regular part of the school day every week, not just when students come visit us at Troy.
To support Rooted’s Farm to School program and help us continue to provide these programs to our schools and students, visit rootedwi.org. We hope to see you at our upcoming community events at Troy Farm and Troy Gardens this summer.
