It’s good to be back in the Northside News. Fall campaign season is in full swing, and while that means great engagement on the national scene, I encourage keeping an eye on the local and state levels. Of course, vote!
I appreciate everyone’s involvement in canvassing and talking to neighbors, friends and family members. I know it took many volunteers to get out the vote for the primary. Congratulations to the Northside Action Team on that effort!
I also know that our community’s needs are not on hold for the campaign season. My original motivation for public office came from volunteering and seeing the unmet needs. Things have not gotten easier since I was first elected to the Common Council in 2015 or to the State Assembly in 2020. I know from the news, from the high cost of everything, and the immense difficulty finding and maintaining stable housing. I know from the reasons people call the office for assistance, and I am always glad when we can help.
Through involvement in campaigns, even in voting, we take some responsibility for the election itself. I encourage everyone to consider how we can extend that excellent spirit beyond the election. Government does not have all the ideas or all the understanding about what needs to be done. The people elected, myself included, do not have all the knowledge and ideas.
Even before Election Day and before the votes are counted, you can let your candidates know your perspective and expectations. You can start to develop a relationship. Reach out! Once January comes and the new legislature is sworn in, things will move fast. As individuals, community volunteers and organizations, you can build the foundation of relationship with your new legislators now.
It is and has been an honor to represent you!
