Support local this holiday season

Dane Buy Local

The holiday season is upon us, bringing with it a unique opportunity to make a difference in our community simply by choosing to support local businesses. From one-of-a-kind gifts to unforgettable dining experiences, shopping locally not only offers memorable options for everyone on your list but also strengthens our region’s economy, creating a ripple effect of benefits that reach far beyond a single transaction.

When you buy local, you’re supporting your neighbors — small business owners who pour their hearts into their products, services and shops. These local entrepreneurs give back in numerous ways: they reinvest in the community, create jobs, and even help fund the essential services we all depend on. In fact, studies show that for every dollar spent at a local business, up to 68 cents stays within the community, compared to only 43 cents when you shop at a national chain.

According to the 2017 Economic Census, Dane County produced retail sales across all lines of goods of roughly $5.1 billion when excluding auto sales, gas stations and non-store retailers. Assuming this survey provides a representative sample of area independent retailers, a market shift of just 10% from chains to independents would retain an additional $173 million in the local economy every year. This figure highlights the profound impact even small changes in consumer choices can make on our community’s economic vitality.

As you consider your holiday shopping list, take a moment to think about the impact you could have. Whether you’re purchasing handcrafted goods, gift cards to independent restaurants, or locally made specialty foods, each choice to shop locally helps fuel a thriving, sustainable local economy. By supporting local businesses this holiday season, you are making a meaningful investment in the community we all love and call home.

Let’s make this holiday season one to remember with gifts that keep on giving. Together, we can strengthen our community and ensure that local businesses not only survive but thrive into the New Year. Happy local shopping!
