Troy Drive rail bridge plans delayed

By Bex Kane
Northside News

The City of Madison has a plan to replace the existing rail bridge alongside Troy Drive near Marcy Road. The existing bridge has a number of problems, including low clearance, a narrow underpass, and its general age.

The bridge is visibly quite old, and currently narrow road and sidewalk lanes run under it. In addition, taller vehicles becoming trapped or damaged is an occasional, but familiar, occurrence.

Although construction was originally scheduled to begin in 2024, it has yet to commence as of June 2025. According to Assistant City Engineer Chris Petykowski, the delay is primarily due to a remaining need to establish a final agreement between the city and the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad Company regarding the details and timing of the construction. However, when the project does proceed, it is planned to replace the existing bridge with a wider one, which the city says will allow for a second lane, bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides of Troy Drive.

We also asked if there were any design documents or other visual representations of the planned construction available to be published and were told that, unfortunately, there currently are not.
