In August Derek Adametz published “Unbreakable Wings,” the true story of his life as a Wisconsin farm kid, a Navy pilot, and a cancer survivor.Screenshot 2025 09 22 at 9.28.44 AM

Adametz grew up on a farm just outside Madison and worked at Skipper Buds on the Northside while he attended college. Though the farm shaped him, he dreamed of more. That “more” came into focus the day he fell in love with aviation — and from that moment on, he set his sights on the skies and became a Navy pilot.

Just a few months into his first squadron assignment, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In an instant, he was grounded and thrust into a different kind of battle. He knew that if he ever wanted to fly again, he’d have to fight not just for his career but for his life.

Told with raw honesty, a touch of humor, and an abundance of heart “Unbreakable Wings” is a testament to grit, resilience and the strength of the human spirit. From soaring above the clouds to the solitude of a hospital room, his story is one of enduring courage and immense inspiration.

“Unbreakable Wings” is available at Ballastbooks.com and Amazon.com.
